A senior Sony exec, who remains unnamed, told Billboard magazine that the takedowns are due to a ‘lack of monetisation opportunities’, although spokespeople for Sony and Columbia Records have declined to comment.
The action follows steps by SoundCloud last August to introduce advertising on the platform and allow users to collect royalties for the first time.
In November, the Berlin-based music service also announced plans for subscription service On SoundCloud with Warner Music Group (WMG).
The deal covers both WMG’s roster of recording artists and songwriters signed to Warner/Chappell.
On SoundCloud has been slated for released during the first half of 2015, however Sony Music’s takedown action may well impact the launch.
