Arjelevez Maxwell has been named as the winner of the Academy of Contemporary Music’s (ACM) first Freddie Mercury Scholarship.
ACM and Metropolis announced the first ever Freddie Mercury Scholarship in May 2016 to celebrate the Queen singer’s seventieth birthday on 5 September.
According to the organisers, Arjelevez was chosen based on her songwriting talent and potential. She will study the Music Industry Practice degree for free and be based at the iconic Metropolis Studios.
As world leaders in music education, ACM works to ensure that it continues to bring fresh talent into the heart of the music industry. Having shaped the sector as innovators for over 20 years, both ACM and Queen believed that this was the perfect opportunity to create a long lasting legacy for the next generation of gifted students.
Ian Brenchley, Metropolis Studios chief executive officer, said: ‘We are very excited to welcome Arjelevez on to our ACM degree programme here at Metropolis. Freddie wrote and recorded so much material at our studio and we really feel his legacy lives on whenever we hear his Fazioli grand piano played in Studio A. As a creative at the forefront of the industry and a pioneer of his time, I know Freddie too would be extremely pleased to offer this fantastic opportunity to such a talented young woman.’
Commenting, Arjelevez added: ‘I was already incredibly excited after my induction day at ACM and moving back into London, it's quite nerve racking to drop everything you once had planned to fully immerse yourself into music so you can pursue your dream.
‘I love making music more than anything and already felt so lucky to have an opportunity to do this at the Metropolis Studios, so I really am over the moon to have been picked for the scholarship and ready for what the future holds!’
