PRS for Music has shared a new 110-strong list of songwriters and composers from the thriving music creator community who are redefining boundaries within the art of songwriting.

The list has been published today (3 October) as PRS continues to celebrate its 110th anniversary, with the organisation sharing exclusive data which shows a remarkable growth in the number of active songwriters and music creators.

Last year, over 10,000 songwriters and composers took the next step in their creative journey by joining PRS — more than in any previous 12-month period. PRS has also revealed that 37,000 music creators have joined the organisation in the past five years, with the PRS membership growing by 20% since 2019.

4.5 million new songs and compositions were registered with PRS for Music in 2023, increasing the number of musical works it represents to 41 million.

Drawing on this data, PRS has now shared a new list which spotlights 110 music creators whose storytelling and sound are pushing the music industry forward.

From the likes of producers like I. Jordan and Barry Can’t Swim to classical composers like Dani Howard and Benjamin Kwasi Burrell, the list — which you can see below — showcases a diverse selection of the hugely talented music creators who make up the PRS membership.

Speaking about being included on the list, composer and Ivor Novello Award nominee Benjamin Kwasi Burrell said: ‘It's such a privilege to be even considered a composer, I feel it's one of the most blessed ways to be part of the music industry. I am so grateful to be able to get up each day and create music in collaboration with other creative minds and have other wonderful musicians bring it to life. Many thanks to PRS for supporting this journey.’

Antony Szmierek, songwriter and 6 Music Artist Of The Year 2023, added: ‘Writing for me is a compulsion, and as natural as sleeping or making a coffee. It’s not something I really have to think about. Not all the ideas are good - in fact most are terrible - but the act of writing and sharing how I feel with people doesn’t feel like an option. So, to receive royalties, or more accurately have this quantifiable reward for connecting with people and getting my words out there, is one of the more surreal parts.

‘To be on a list like this doubly so. PRS is something that keeps songwriters going, especially in the earliest stages. It’s a way of letting us know we’re onto something, and that being an artist is a viable career for everyone.’
