Amit Sharma reviews the second in Wise Publications' critically acclaimed Play Guitar With Led Zeppelin Series.

The Best Of Led Zeppelin Vol. 2 examines 8 classic Led Zeppelin tracks in their entirety with complete guitar tablature, chord boxes and notation. The book comes with 2 CDs that contain full instrumental demos, which really allow a guitarist to hear the parts to play without the distraction of vocals. The second CD has backing tracks with the guitar parts removed, perfect for jamming along once you’ve learned the riffs and the solos.

Understandably the task of playing as well as Jimmy Page is a daunting one, but this book arms you with all the knowledge, tips and notation you need to get there – the rest is down to you. There is a guide to getting the right sound, with details of the instruments and equipment used to record original songs, the demos and backing tracks. This is key in learning how to fill the shoes of one of the world’s most seminal rock musicians: the more you understand the elements of such a classic guitar tone, the more likely you are to play these parts convincingly.

The lyrics and time bar really help with following up to 12 pages of music notation per track, especially on the longer pieces like Stairway To Heaven and Achilles Last Stand. These reference points prevent getting lost and also serve a purpose in breaking down each song into bite-size chunks to help digest all of the information.

There is a guide to guitar tablature so that the notation can be interpreted by newer musicians or those less familiar with the system, as well as standard score. The score and tablature work together very well, as there’s always a few different positions notes and chords can be played which can only be illustrated by tablature, whilst the score is always a great portrayal of the rhythmic content.

The Best Of Led Zeppelin Vol. 2 is an insightful guide to playing the parts and solos of Jimmy Page and will help guitarists of all levels understand the songwriting behind the great music of Led Zeppelin.
