Following the release of his brilliantly ambitious LP More Arriving, Sarathy Korwar takes over M’s Friday playlist.
Sarathy was born in the US and grew up in Ahmedabad and Chennai in India before moving to London and training as a classical tabla player.
He has subsequently become one of the leading lights of UK jazz and released his critically acclaimed debut album Day to Day via Ninja Tune in 2016.
The record was a conflation of traditional folk music with contemporary jazz and electronics and he further delved into cultural pluralism with his next release, on which he collaborated with UPAJ Collective.
My East is Your West blended classical instrumentation with jazz, and perhaps unsurprisingly, More Arriving is a another significant explorative development that widens his musical purview another notch to include hip hop and modern poetry.

This record blew me away when I first heard it. Great combination of jazz and hip-hop, adventurous arrangements and fierce sonics.
Ali Hassan Kuban – Habibi
The funkiest groove and horn lines! Summer anthem every year.
Viveick Rajagopalan/Swadesi – Ta Dhom
Great use of konnakol, Indian percussion and rap coming out of Mumbai. Rajagopalan and Swadesi are digging in to a language that sounds distinctly their own and I'm always looking forward hearing what they do next.
Ibrahim Maalouf – Never Serious
Love the recording quality on this song. I imagine listening to it from a balcony, hearing the band play on the street below. Such a groovy tune!

Raw punk energy coming from the band. The freshest sound I have heard all year.
Little Simz – Offence
Fierce lyrics and sounds from one of London's defining artists of today.
Swet Shop Boys – Zayn Malik
The band made a massive dent in South Asian music circles with their 2017 album. It spoke to a whole generation about the South Asian experience and the album will be remembered for a long time to come.
Lifafa – Jaago
My favourite record from 2019 so far. Thom Yorke meets Indian future nostalgia.
Jlin - Unknown Tongues
Heavy futurist sounds from this amazing producer in Chicago. Going to be listening to her a lot going in to writing my next album!
