Louisa Gerstein is the brains behind Deep Throat Choir, an all-female singing collective which formed in 2013.
The former Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Landshapes band member was driven by the desire to take music back to its simplest form – drums and vocals. To that end, she developed the choir from an infrequent meeting of a handful of like-minded singers into an album-producing, ubiquitous festival force.
Over the last few years the East London chorus has performed at the WOW, Green Man and Wilderness festivals, to name a few, and has collaborated with Horse Meat Disco, Matthew E White, Stealing Sheep and Dillon.
Their next venture is a collaborative album with Simian Mobile Disco called Murmurations, which lands on 11 May.
For this week’s playlist, Louisa lets us in on the songs that have shaped her…
The first record I ever bought was…
The Score by The Fugees.
The first song I developed an obsession for was…
The Beach Boys’ Surfin’ USA.
My favourite cover version is…
Julia Holter’s version of Don’t Make Me Over is great.
The song that should’ve been a hit but never made it is…
I couldn’t possibly know! I always think more people should have known about Sleeping States - Gardens of the South is a hit.
The last great record I listened to was…
Big Thief’s Masterpiece and Capacity.
The song I wish I’d written is…
Parenthesis by The Blow.
The song that makes me cry is…
The Rip by Portishead, Little Girl Blue by Nina Simone and For You by Tracy Chapman.
The song that I know all the words to is…
Too many to mention!
My all-time favourite film soundtrack is…
The Donnie Darko soundtrack by Michael Andrews.
