This week Wakefield’s Long Division Festival revealed additions to their line-up, including Peter Hook and the Light, We Are Scientists, Penguin Café and Asian Dub Foundation.
The newly-announced acts join Bill Ryder-Jones, Avi Buffalo and Art Brut for the multi-venue event which takes place across Wakefield from 29 May – 2 June.
To celebrate the latest line-up announcements the organisers have complied a special playlist featuring artists appearing at the festival.
Dean Freeman, director, Long Division Festival says: ‘After our biggest ever year in 2018, our feeling for 2019 very much centred around this phrase of "More Than A Festival". We've always been challenged by the physical spaces and the infrastructure in Wakefield; we're not a city setup to host something like Long Division. But we've always turned that into a positive, making the festival an unusual but joyfully surprising experience. We've continued that beyond that music we put on - and for me I feel this is the best line-up up we've had from top to bottom.’
Knuckle – Life Is Hard When You’re Soft Inside
Although they declare themselves from Huddersfield, Jonny is a Wakey lad through and through. Again, we've supported his work in other bands for years, but Knuckle's new record is definitely among his best work.
Graft – Man Like
Recent MOBO winner Graft is something a bit different for us. Leeds based artist Prince Omari got a a great response on the BBC Introducing Stage last year and made us want to develop our rap & grime offering across the line-up
Living Body – I Recollect
Really interesting music from an artist that you never know quite what to expect. We put them forward for the BBC Introducing this stage this year and they are one of ten bands on our festival vinyl compilation.
Mi Mye – Your Left Side
Mi Mye has done almost everything at Long Division; supported The Cribs, run a stage, recorded a live album, been on our booking agency roster... but they were booked by new promoter Body's this year to support Meursault. Beautiful clash of Wakefield and Scottish influences
Knitting Grooves – When There Were No Streets
The application process always throws up interesting things; we had no idea there was a drum and bass / trip-hop influenced artist in our city getting 6 Music airplay. Now we do!
The Golden Age Of TV – Television
It's been to see this band grow over the last couple of years – upbeat pop influenced indie is the kind of description that would usually make me roll my eyes, but they are great and deserve big things.
Disguises – Your Old Haunts
Another supergroup of sorts – a mix of performers from brilliant but departed Wakefield bands Runaround Kids, The Spills and The Old House whose first physical release will be on our compilation.
Alessi's Ark – Wives
Perhaps not a brand-new artist, but new to us – at its core just wonderful, beautiful songwriting that sounds easy to the untrained ear, but is full of laidback invention.
Cruel World – Boxer * (not on Spotify, but please see the Soundcloud link below)
Frontman / songwriter James was formerly of Long Division favourites Post War Glamour Girls, but with a new set of musicians from a range of great Leeds based bands, the first things we've heard from Cruel World have been brilliant.
