Footloose festival Afropunk dabbles at the cutting edge of black urban culture, cooking up an untouchable line-up of genre-hopping talent at the top of their game.

Since its DIY beginnings in the backwaters of Brooklyn over a decade ago, it’s grown into a global institution, throwing annual shindigs in New York, London, Paris, Atlanta and Johannesburg.

Built on a manifesto of ‘no sexism, no racism, no ableism, no ageism, no fatphobia, no homophobia, no transphobia, no hatefulness’, it’s a love-in like no other.

This weekend sees its welcome return to London, with heavyweights JME, Jazzie B, Little Simz and The Heavy all representing for the UK.

They’ll be joined by the likes of Connie Constance, Nao, Mahalia, Petite Noir, Kojey Radical and Cosmo Pyke, who’ll be bringing their wares to Deptford venue The Printworks across 22 and 23 July.

The M magazine crew will be down to witness Afropunk live and direct for the first time, chatting to artists in the PRS for Music-sponsored green room.

To celebrate, we’re giving over this week's playlist slot to some of the acts we’re most excited to be catching…
