‘To me everything is political, and if you say it’s not political that’s a privileged choice to not have to interact with politics,’ says East-London’s Poppy Ajudha.

As the daughter of a nightclub owner, Poppy was exposed to a wide range of music from a young age, leading to an early appreciation of genres like jazz, roots and rocksteady.

This early education paid off in spades as she effortlessly blends jazz with R&B and lyrically treads a socially conscious path.

She has released a string of singles over the last few years, and the fruits of her labour landed her the coveted Soul Act of the Year gong at the 2019 edition of the Jazz FM Awards.

Perhaps more surprisingly, her music has made waves across the pond and landed on Barack Obama’s hugely influential playlist of the year as a featured artist on the Tom Misch track Disco Yes.

In between her Glastonbury sets at the PRS for Music tent and Pussy Parlure, we talked to the rising star about the highlights of her year so far, her songwriting process and her hugely anticipated debut album.
