‘After all these years if our career can be likened to a big cake, this is the icing on the cake,’ says Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover of the band’s Ivors win.
Glover and bandmates Ian Paice and Ian Gillan attended the 64th Ivor Novello Awards last week (23 May) at London’s Grosvenor House to collect the International Achievement gong.
The British hard rock legends formed in 1968 and are considered to be one of the early pioneers of heavy metal alongside contemporaries like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
The three members were active in the band at their most commercially successful period between 1969 to 1973 when the line up also included the late Jon Lord.
During this time Deep Purple released possibly their most famous record, Machine Head, which achieved the number one spot in the UK and found an international audience in America and Canada hitting number seven and number one in the charts respectively.
The band has subsequently influenced acts as diverse as Queen and Van Halen to Metallica and Judas Priest.
We caught up with the three Deep Purple members fresh from picking up the award to get their reaction on the honour as they reflected on their international success and legacy. Check out the video below…
