When Craig David first appeared on the Artful Dodger-produced track Re-Rewind back in 1999, he was ready to jump feet first onto the music industry rollercoaster.
The track’s tricky garage rhythms and soulful swagger ensured it blew up big, landing him a major label record deal and a string of follow-up hits.
His debut solo album Born To Do It followed swiftly after in 2000, and since then, Craig has released another five solo albums and worked with the likes of Jay Sean, Rita Ora and Sting.
But the platinum-selling, award-winning artist has never been able to recapture the initial buzz of his early years – until now.
In one of the unlikeliest comebacks of the year, Craig’s been back in the top 20, collaborated with MC Big Narstie and Katy B, and found himself on the right end of a media scuffle over his latest live venture, Craig David’s TS5.
We caught up with him at The Ivors (where he was invited to present Jamie Lawson with the Best Song Musically and Lyrically accolade) to learn more about his journey.
Here, he chats about his comeback, falling back in love with songwriting and his ongoing passion for grime and reggae.
