Jazz giant Courtney Pine has been at the forefront of Britain’s burgeoning scene for 30 years.
As a saxophonist, collaborator and all-round innovator, he has pushed UK jazz onwards and upwards, helping pave the way for its current moment in the sun.
In the eighties he was one of the first black British jazz artists to make a serious mark with his debut album Journey to the Urge Within.
He then went on to work with Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Carleen Anderson and Angie Stone, to name a few.
Now with an OBE and CBE for his services to music, Courtney continues to break new ground in the studio, on stage and over the airwaves as an award-winning radio presenter.
His latest LP, Black Notes From the Deep, features vocals from UK soul star Omar and will be released in October. He’s currently touring the record now, with dates later this month and in July (see below for more).
We were lucky enough to catch him backstage at the recent Jazz FM Awards to get his take on the health of British jazz and hear how digital has transformed creativity and collaboration across the scene…
