For most of us, music is a massive part of our daily lives. We carry it around with us, hear it when we’re out shopping, watching television, at sports events… everywhere. It’s often how we define ourselves, pick our friends and choose our pastimes.

It’s also a crucial component to great TV adverts. Music sets the mood like nothing else and some jingles, such as the McDonald's whistle or the HomeBase appropriation of the Young Folks melody, can become valuable marketing tools.

We’ve compiled some of our favourite songs from adverts for this week’s playlist. Here, you’ll find some of the most iconic song adverts ever – from Marvin Gaye's I Heard it Through the Grapevine, used in THE Levi's launderette ad from 1985, to Blur’s epic ballad The Universal, currently on heavy rotation in the British Gas campaign.

You'll also hear the likes of Velvet Underground, Giorgio Moroder, Feist, The Knife, Jim Noir, Free, This Mortal Coil and Goldfrapp (pictured).

As usual, if there are any songs you think we’ve missed off our list, then let us know at www.facebook.com/PRSforMusic or tweet us @M_magazinePRS
