M popped on a train to Brighton and caught up with soul singer Alice Russell and producer TM Juke over a cup of tea. Watch our interview to hear what the pair had to say about the creative process and which artists they would like to write songs for.
Alice Russell is a Brighton-based singer who grew up in Suffolk and fell in love with gospel and soul music by artists such as Minnie Ripperton, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin at a young age.
Alice began her career as a featured vocalist with the likes of Bah Samba, Quantic, TM Juke, Kushti and Nostalgia 77, before creating her first studio album My Favourite Letters with producer TM Juke (Alex Cowan) in 2005. The singer's second album, Pot Of Gold was released in 2008. As well as these two albums, Alice has released two collections of collaborations and remixes - Under The Munka Moon volumes I and II, and a Pot of Gold Remix album.
In 2010, Alice worked on the David Byrne and Fatboy slim album Here Lies Love, singing the track Men Will Do Anything.
As well as being a long-time collaborator with Alice Russell, Alex Cowan aka TM Juke has released three artist albums - 2003's Maps From The Wilderness, Foward in 2006 and Boto And The Second Liners as TM Juke And The Jack Baker Trio in 2008.
Alex grew up learning classical and jazz guitar before becoming fascinated by samplers. A talented DJ, songwriter, arranger and producer, Cowan continues to work with Alice Russell as well as his own projects.
