She invited some of the world’s best session musicians to contribute, including double bassist Charlie Jones (Robert Plant, Goldfrapp), Bob Kinkel on piano (Trans-Siberian Orchestra), drummer Tony Beard (Madonna, Paul McCartney, Bee Gees) and Adam Rogers on guitar (Norah Jones, Paul Simon).
Daughter of screenwriter Norman, who penned hit 70s film Saturday Night Fever, and niece of esteemed record producer Jerry, Erica has been around music and the arts all her life, absorbing inspiration from stage and screen.
In the 90s she met XTC frontman Andy Partridge, who encouraged her to spend time in the recording studio. A decade later she began to tentatively record material for this album. We spent 30 seconds with Erica to find out more…
I first started writing music because…
It was fun and i could escape from reality.
I have been making music since…
I was in my teens and needed an outlet from the family drama.
My music is…
Like chocolate brownie batter served on a velvet plate, as if Kate Bush and Karen Carpenter had a love child.
You'll like me if you listen to...
Timelessly – you’ll float away in a cosmic bathtub.
My favourite venue is…
The Royal Albert Hall.
Music is important because…
It soothes the soul.
My biggest inspiration is…
Any song that has a strong sense of melody!
My dream collaboration would be…
Yip Harburg who wrote the lyrics to Somewhere Over the Rainbow and all of The Wizard of Oz: A master at rhyme and wit.
To try me out, listen to my song…
My Silent Star, it seems to touch a big universal nerve.
If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Neuroscientist studying my neighbour’s brain.
In 10 years’ time I want to be...
Singing to cabbages and hear them singing back.
Sunlit Night is released on 18 March.
