Moses Boyd, Sink Ya Teeth and Tawiah
The February 2020 edition of PRS for Music Presents features performances from Moses Boyd, Sink Ya Teeth and Tawiah.
About the artists
Moses Boyd
Moses Boyd is a young auteur, threading several thrilling musical traditions into a bold new tapestry: the raw energy of grime and afrobeats and the rolling club rhythms of the London underground, combined with the freewheeling creativity and collaborative spirit of his jazz foundations.
A double MOBO & Jazz FM Award winner, Moses Boyd will join us on the 6 February for the first PRS Presents of the year. Following the recent release of his brooding, groove-driven single ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ and a sold-out show at legendary London club Fabric, south London jazz drummer, producer and composer Moses Boyd announced a 13-date UK and European tour for February/March 2020, culminating in a hometown show at the Electric Brixton.
Sink Ya Teeth
Maria Uzor and Gemma Cullingford formed Sink Ya Teeth three years ago in a pub in the flatlands of Norfolk and they write and produce all their music in their living rooms. The duo takes themes of self-medication (‘The Vaccine’), problematic neighbours (‘Stella’), and unity in the face of current polarity (‘The Hot House’) and set them to a pumping 4/4 beat. It’s dark disco, sure, but it’s OK to dance in the dark.
The past year since the release of their debut album has seen them unexpectedly headline European festival Pohoda to a crowd of 30,000 after Lykke Li pulled out at the last minute, embark on tours in the UK and France, and record sessions for KEXP and BBC Maida Vale. The pair have garnered fans in Steve Lamacq and Amy Lame (BBC 6 Music), James Lavelle (UNKLE) and A Certain Ratio, alongside growing recognition for their live shows. On the 28 February, Sink Ya Teeth will release a new single – a follow-up since their debut ‘Two’ – that continues in to delve deeper into their world of melancholia and deep house.
Tawiah
Tawiah joins us for PRS Presents after the release of her debut album in the latter part of 2019. ‘Starts Again’ is a 10-piece opus released with First World Records. The album may be her debut but Tawiah has been a long-established artist in the UK music scene; having previously self-released two EPs and a mixtape, as well as high-profile collaborations with Cinematic Orchestra, Blood Orange, Mark Ronson, Kindness, Cee-Lo, Wiley, Zed Bias and Eric Laus. Meanwhile, she has been championed by Zane Lowe, Gilles Peterson and supported Moses Sumney on his recent EU tour.
Tawiah’s music is a seamless blend of avant-garde sensibilities, low slung beats and layered harmonies. The vestiges of Tawiah’s early church vocal training contrast subtly against a distinctive South London accent, which has helped place her firmly at the vanguard of the British alternative soul movement. This has all assisted in building her reputation as one of the country’s most exciting live performers.
