In September 2018 PRS for Music Presents headed to Wales to showcase the talents of Future of the Left, Boy Azooga, Rachel K Collier and Al Lewis at Tramshed in Cardiff.

Future of the Left

Future of the Left are a rock band from Cardiff, Wales. they were constituted, time-fans, in the past, which is when rocks were formed then shaped by tides/wind/jcb diggers, and much in that way they messed on in rehearsal rooms until songs - or units of music pertaining to be songs - were written and presented to audiences who vary greatly in size depending on age and education level, just like Brexit.

Currently the band consists of Jack Egglestone (drums), Julia Ruzicka (bass) and Andrew Falkous (vocals, guitar) - there are also keyboards sometimes, but that looks weird in brackets. the touring line-up is completed by Ian Wilson of the band Art Brut, who has done more touring than the rest of us so is quicker at buffets. 

Boy Azooga

Boy Azooga’s debut album, 1, 2 Kung Fu, is piloted by Davey Newington, a young man with much musical heritage. One of his granddads was a jazzer who played drums for the Royal Marines. Davey’s dad (violin) and his mum (clarinet) both played, and met, in the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales. Davey himself also enjoyed orchestral engagement, playing in various Welsh Orchestra’s and Jazz bands as a teenager.

Davey took up the drums at the age of six. More recently, and operating as one Bongo Fury, he became the rhythmic pulse for Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon, sat behind the kit as Charlotte plied joyous pop hedonism to Glastonbury and beyond. This would have been enough for some, but now Davey returns as Boy Azooga. The oldest song on the debut album is Hangover Square, titled after Patrick Hamilton’s celebrated and blackly compelling 1941 novel of the same name. The book was given to Davey by his dad as Davey left home at the age of 18. He was so taken with the novel that he almost immediately turned the book’s narrative into a song. Now, completing a circle, Newington senior plays strings on the Boy Azooga album. Davey plays everything else.

Rachel K Collier

A one-woman electronic production machine and die-hard Ableton enthusiast, Collier is known for using a multi-instrument technical setup to enable her to perform her song-focused, high-energy studio productions in a live setting.

Performing on stage together with live percussionist and interactive visuals, Collier has built and refined her live show throughout 2017 gaining significant recognition in the UK, completing a nine-date debut Tour, playing for FOCUS Wales and BBC Introducing at SXSW, Amsterdam Dance Event, as well as a live BBC Radio session, sold-out shows at KOKO, Camden and 93 Feet East, headlining “Beats for Love” Festival in the Czech Republic and as part of Ableton “Loop” in Berlin.

Al Lewis

Al Lewis is a singer/songwriter originally from North Wales now based in Cardiff.

As a bilingual writer and performer, Al has so far released a total of 5 albums, his debut English language album ‘In the Wake’ was nominated for the inaugural Welsh Music Prize and his Welsh language album ‘Heulwen o Hiraeth’ was nominated for the National Eisteddfod Welsh Album of the Year prize. Al has spent multiple weeks on the BBC Cymru Welsh Language Charts and scooped the award for ‘Best Male Artist’ two years in a row at the BBC Radio Cymru Awards.
