I am a composer, songwriter, mixer and producer, and have worked in UK and international media for over 30 years. I began as a songwriter, then got my break in television in the mid-90s, scoring for Channel 4’s Gamesmaster as part of collective The Fratelli Brothers. We quickly moved into documentary, then feature doc and drama, before I relocated and pursued a solo composing career. To date, I’ve scored over 400 shows, including flagship BBC series like Natural World, Arena and Omnibus, Channel 4's Dispatches, 1900 House and Grand Designs, National Geographic’s Naked Science and Discovery’s hit show Future Weapons.

As well as scoring, I’ve worked in sound design and on VR projects. I’ve had the opportunity to work with many different musicians in a range of genres - from solo players to ensembles and full orchestra.

Over many years, I collaborated with one of the pioneers of German electronica Hans-Joachim Roedelius, co-writing a couple of albums together, and have written, produced and mixed for many diverse artists including Eddi Reader, Boo Hewerdine, The Ting Tings, Miles Hunt and The Wonder Stuff.

I write and record out of a rural studio in the Shropshire Hills, often mixing digital and tape recording, and experimenting with vintage analogue equipment. As well as working with established artists, I like to work with young people starting out and often offer placements and mentoring. With my occasional band project No Dakota, I continue to write and record songs with a bunch of like-minded musicians and guest artists.

Recently I’ve become a consultant for a founder team developing a new artist-centric music platform, and I'm particularly interested in DRM issues, and how best to maximise artists’ potential in the digital online environment. We go live later in 2025!

Current and recent directorships: Fairground Music Limited and Rank Amateur Limited

Manifesto

Having been a PRS member for 33 years, I have benefitted enormously from the income stream from royalty collection. Having once taken that service for granted, I now see that our rights as writers and artists are coming under increasing threat, and it has never been more important to protect ourselves - it’s our future income! The issues facing us have never been so challenging. Artists’ and writers’ rights are confronted by the effects of streaming, the proliferation of online audio libraries and royalty-free music, A.I. music generation, and the results of Brexit and the pandemic on the live music and touring circuit.

PRS is unique in offering a single voice representing all UK artists and writers, and championing their rights. As a member of the PRS Members’ Council it would be my intention to give voice to the membership’s concerns on all these matters - from DRM issues to artists’ welfare, diversity and inclusivity. The effects of arts and education under-funding impacts on the future social make-up of our membership, and it’s our responsibility to make sure music continues to play a vital role in contributing to UK cultural life - and far beyond. PRS serves a vital role in advocating for artists starting out on their journey. After all, it is these artists and writers that will be the income-generators of the future, and sustain and grow the society in years to come.

With your mandate, I would love the opportunity to contribute my experience and enthusiasm to the PRS Members’ Council, be an effective advocate for your concerns and a voice for your ideas about the society. It is there for us, and together we can make it what we want it to be!
