Manifesto

I have been a full-time songwriter, producer and vocal producer for almost 15 years, and I still wake up every day feeling eternally grateful that I still get to do this job for a living. I moved to London from North Yorkshire to pursue this career and I know firsthand what it’s like trying to get into the songwriting scene here and especially how hard it is to make a living whilst trying to do so. I spent my first few years hostel/sofa surfing and it took me a good 4/5 years of struggle before I was able to start affording regular rent. I’m an extremely active songwriter, working usually 5 sessions a week, so I’m constantly speaking with artists / writers / producers about their views on the current state of the industry, their struggles and what could be improved etc. I often encounter younger writers who are going through the same hardships I went through, and although I still feel like I’m just getting started in my career, I feel like it’s time I did more to give back and help out where I can.

Serving on the PRS Members’ Council seems like a great place to do this. As both a writer AND a producer, I see from both sides how hard writers have it at the moment. I experience and witness so many cases of writers’ publishing on a song going from say, 33% to almost nothing after landing a cut with a big artist or DJ and then seeing more and more people added to the publishing credits, cutting their earnings down and down. To combat this, I want to help push the needle towards normalising things like writer fees and master points, which could really go a long way to supporting writers. I want to help connect PRS even more with its members and help it support more members who are struggling. I also want to help songwriters retain more of the publishing they deserve and feel empowered to fight for fair compensation for their work. Please consider giving me your vote! Thank you!
