Playing music at work
Music creates the perfect atmosphere for your business, and the right music can influence customer behaviours and mood, increasing dwell time. Depending on how you wish to play music, you may need multiple licences.
Do you play music to your customers and/or staff?
Whether you run a café, shop, gym or any other workplace that plays music, TheMusicLicence from PPL PRS allows you to play music in your business whether through the radio, TV, other digital devices and live performances.
Do you use your own playlists in your business?
With the rise in streaming platforms and personal libraries, business owners now have the ability to control what music is played in their space. The Commercial Playlisting Licence, from MCPS, let's you ‘copy’ the music that best fits your business environment.
What you need to do to use your playlists in your business
- TheMusicLicence, from PPL PRS and the Commercial Playlisting licence, from MCPS, to use your downloaded playlists in your business.
- The Commercial Playlisting licence covers the copying rights, but to play music in your business, you’ll need a public performance licence from PPL PRS Ltd.
Alternatives to the Commercial Playlist Licence
You can still play the radio or TV with TheMusicLicence from PPL PRS in your business.
If you only stream the playlist, and do not download it to your electronic device, you do not need a commercial playlist licence.
Or you can choose from our trusted music suppliers for curated playlists, background music and more. Explore music suppliers.
Do you use music online in your business?
If you want to use music online in your business, charity or government organisation you will need a Digital Music Licence for Business. This new licence is replacing the Limited Online Music Licence (LOML).
This licence will allow these businesses to:
- stream music online
- provide previewing clips of music
- make available limited on demand streaming
- allows users to download content (non-music focused)
This is a separate licence to TheMusicLicence and Commercial Playlisting and only covers online usage.
