Whether you are playing music online in your business via previewing clips, using music to accompany your podcast or even during a stream of a worship service, you will need a digital music licence. By purchasing a licence, you will not only be given access to over 38 million musical works PRS for Music represent, but also ensure members are paid for their work.
Limited Online Music Licence (LOML)
The Limited Online Music Licence (LOML) is being decommissioned this year and replaced with sector-specific digital music licences. It is still available for some customers to purchase until the end of 2024, after which, all customers will be able to purchase a more suitable licence. The Limited Online Music Licence is an annual licence that covers the communication to the public and associated mechanical rights of our members' repertoire through digital services.
- Synchronisation rights.
If you have licensed the synchronisation rights via MCPS Production Music, you will require a Performing Right Online Licence (PROL). For advice on how to clear synchronization rights or information on which rightsholders to contact, please reach out to us at synclicensing@prsformusic.com.
- Certain repertoire works are not licensed for online karaoke services.
- Sound recording rights
- Services operating outside the UK
- Use of music in adverts, sponsorship or corporate videos
- Adaptations of works
- Content on third party websites and social media platforms such as YouTube or Facebook.
- Use of music in businesses via streaming, music on demand and previewing clips. For example, a small business which uses music to compliment a staff quiz would need a Digital Music Licence for Business.
- A place of worship wishing to use music in their stream of a worship service, wedding or funeral.

How we calculate the LOML licence fee
The Limited Online Music Licence is an annual blanket licence. If you’re only using music for a set number of months, you can choose to be charged pro-rata for these months, subject to a minimum fee of £94 + VAT. You'll need to pay a licence fee for each type of activity.Use this guide to see which is the right licence band for you.
Digital Music Licence for Business
This is a new digital licensing scheme designed specifically for businesses who want to use music online, but whose main focus isn't making music available.
This licence offers flexibility for businesses to use more of the music they love online through royalty rate blocks (£173 + VAT). The pre-existing £12.5k revenue cap in place for the Limited Online Music Licence LOML will be removed, allowing more business to benefit and unlock the ability to use PRS & MCPS repertoire, as well as production music sound recordings (PMSR).
The Digital Music Licence for Business is available to Individuals, businesses, charities and government organisations who wish to use music online providing no revenue is derived from the use of music.
Communication to the public and mechanical rights for:
- Streaming
- Previewing clips
- Streaming on demand & downloading of audiovisual 'non music focused' content
This licence does not cover:
- B2B, for example, a business supplying music to places of worship for use in worship services. It does not permit the use of general entertainment content, such as TV programmes, or the use of music in advertising campaigns, sponsorship, or in corporate videos for conferences.
- Synchronisation rights
This licence does not cover any public performance rights and should not be confused with Tariff I– Music in the Workplace, administered by PPL PRS, which applies to the public performance of audible background music for employees in workplaces such as offices and factories.

- Podcasts
- Internet radio stations
- Digital education and fitness providers
- Worship
- On demand music streaming & music downloads
Digital Music Licence for Worship
The Digital Music Licence for Worship covers the use of copyright music in the online streaming of worship services, weddings, and funerals.Our license extends to both live streaming, whether as a video or audio-only, and to content available for on-demand viewing.
With this license, you have the freedom to use the extensive PRS for Music repertoire, which includes over 38 million pieces of copyrighted music of all genres – for example, when sung by the choir, played by a band/ organist, or using recorded music as part of the service.
This licence is inclusive of all faiths.
This licence has been designed as a new bespoke licence in the worship sector for customers who would have previously purchased the Limited Online Music Licence (LOML).

Communication to the public and mechanical rights for:
- Streaming worship services, as well as funerals and weddings, on their own website and third-party platforms in video or audio format.
- Activities associated with worship (outside of the list of excluded activities), such as sharing links to worship services via email, or the occasional meeting associated with worship on third-party platforms such as Zoom or Teams.
This licence does not cover:
- B2B, for example, a business supplying music to places of worship for use in worship services. It does not permit the use of general entertainment content, such as TV programmes, or the use of music in advertising campaigns, sponsorship, or in corporate videos for conferences.
