Bahamas steps up efforts on music copyright protection

PRS for Music is to step up its efforts on the protection of music rights in The Bahamas

Bahamian flag

PRS for Music, the organisation that represents songwriters, composers and music publishers world-wide and administers the music licensing system in Bahamas is working with organisations in the country to extend the take-up of music licences.

Whilst many businesses using music in the Bahamas hold the relevant licence, ensuring those that created it receive the royalties they are rightfully due, there are some businesses that are unaware or have failed to obtain the correct licence.

Bahamian and international songwriters and composers could be missing out on vital royalty payments that allow them to earn from their creative work, the organisation warns.

PRS for Music is to step up its efforts on the protection of music copyright to ensure those that create the music played and performed in the country are properly compensated. It has recently launched a marketing campaign contacting music users and broadcasters to discuss their licensing requirements. PRS for Music are also liaising with government departments, business leaders and other key stakeholders to raise awareness and discuss copyright issues.

There are many businesses and organisations in the Bahamas that have always held the correct licence and it is only fair that we encourage others that want to use music, to do so as well.   The music scene in the Bahamas is at the heart of many businesses and it is vital we help protect that and encourage local grown talent by ensuring they can earn a living when their music is used.
