Royalties processed through PRS for Music’s IMPEL initiative exceed £1 million

16 publishers now signed up to pan-European licensing initiative Imagem Music also added to growing list of ‘Friends of IMPEL’

PRS for Music has announced that royalties exceeding £1m have been processed through its Independent Music Publishers’ European Licensing (IMPEL) initiative, set up in 2010. IMPEL directly licenses Anglo-American online and mobile mechanical rights to new and existing pan-European digital services on behalf of its publisher members along with the matching performing rights.

In January 2012 PRS for Music added Imagem Music to the list of ‘Friends of IMPEL’, joining repertoire represented on the same basis for Peermusic and Chrysalis.

Since launch direct members of IMPEL now include Moncur Street Music, RZO Music and Truelove Music who all joined in July 2010.  Bucks Music Group, Minds on Fire (formerly Club Row Music) and Fintage Publishing signed up in January 2011 and joining in January 2012 are Eagle-i Music and the first publisher based in the United States: Spirit Music Group (New York).

The IMPEL initiative represents for licensees a convenient one-stop shop for this repertoire. PRS for Music was the first society in the world to offer a multi-territory solution for independent publishers and the significant royalties now flowing to publishers highlights the fact we are getting on top of the many complexities in this area.   Progress was slow after launch in 2010, but significant improvements were made in 2011 delivering a boost in monies distributed and improvements in administration; we look forward to building on this throughout 2012.

IMPEL has removed the complexity of Pan European Licensing for independent publishers and greatly eased the administrative burden. The significant and increasingly important online monies we have received and that are in the pipeline is proof that IMPEL publishers are receiving their pan-European royalties more quickly and transparently.  I’m confident this will increase further this year and beyond.

Stuart Hornall of Hornall Brothers Music, Chair - IMPEL Advisory Group

To date PRS for Music has pan-European licensing deals with 7digital, Spotify, Amazon, Apple iTunes and Research in Motion amongst  others and recently announced a licensing deal with Apple for its cloud-based music services, the third cloud service to be licensed.

IMPEL is supported by the Music Publishers Association.
